A student of Fashion Journalism at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University, Melissa previously studied Fashion Merchandising at City College of San Francisco. A lover of all things sartorial, she has worked in and/or studied a number of facets of the industry, including retail sales and operations, fashion forecasting, retail buying, visual merchandising, runway show production, wardrobe styling, fashion modeling, and apparel design and construction. She currently works in luxury retail sales (that’s fancy speak for shopgirl) in Union Square, and writes for TheRumpus.net.
The 1 Girl/6 Months/0 Shopping project began on April 19th, 2010 and is an attempt to take a step back from the marketing culture of contemporary fashion and assess what it is that compels us to consume at the rate we do. The goal is to achieve personal long term sustainability without sacrificing directional fashion, while hopefully creating more public awareness of textile waste issues and the fallacies of green fashion.
Melissa sews things and sells them here.
She creates and styles wardrobe for fashion photo shoots here.
She rambles on about daily inanity on Twitter.
And she models for the good people of JE Model & Talent.
She lives in a very large, very old house in Cole Valley with four other humans, two and a half dogs, a large back yard, and a considerable collection of graphic novels and picture books. She cheats on Cole Valley with the Mission on the weekends because she can’t resist its hot oldies jams and delicious street food. She is a Taurus, doesn’t believe in star signs, loves knitting, baking, and lowbrow pop surrealism.
She thinks writing in the third person is weird.

Hi Melissa, I saw your profile on MM and travelled here via Vox and yes, writing in the third person is weird. I have a somewhat forward question I would rather pose privately so if you are interested in finding out what it is, I’d love to hear from you. Robert
